You can also stack materials and mask with poly selection tags the way you would with standard. Just create a selection set and use that to mask your top material. One caveat with this approach: you have to create and apply the selection tag manually. Dragging a Cycles material onto a selected polyg...

Try rendering a sequence rather than a single frame. Working here (R18)

Not sure of the details of your setup, but I got a xpTrail to render fine within a cloner (RTP and PV).

Okay. Now I get it. Thanks for the explanation. Got some great results with your pre-made n/k groups. I also made a brass now that it makes sense. ;)
