Using hair to randomly distribute objects in Cycles 4D

I would like to do something like this in Cycles 4D: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X8et0bqw7U

But I am having trouble getting the Generate / Instance part working with Cycles 4D.

I have had success with normal hair, but have been struggling to use hair as a way to randomly distribute objects over a surface in Cycles 4D.

It just leaves me with some weird placeholder shapes.

Or....maybe there is a different way to do this kind of thing?
