Micro Poly Displacement inaccurate and sluggish

Post by onkel_olli » Mon May 14, 2018 1:13 am

Hi everyone,

I'm trying out Cycles at the moment and running into an issue with micro poly displacement.
I'm using a JSplacement genrated image map to drive the displacement.
I set up everything correctly (to my knowledge) still the displacement is inaccurate and extremely sluggish (live preview is not very live...). In fact whole Cinema slows down significantly.
I'm comparing it to Octane at the moment and if I use the same map in Octane I get sharp results and snappy viewer feedback. Am I doing anything wrong or is that a limitation of Cycles? Scene file attached (had to put the texture on Dropbox due to upload size limit here. https://www.dropbox.com/s/348gjixvo5yvh ... 0.png?dl=0 ).

Thanks so much!

Hi
I've just tested your scene on my system here and it's working and is responsive.
I'm on a Nvidia 1080.
It is considerably slower when using the CPU.
Are you using Cuda or CPU in your RealTimePreview window?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply.
Everything's switched to GPU/CUDA, I'm on a 1080 as well.

Cheers.

Are you on R19?
If so, please go to the preferences menu and in the view settings uncheck ‘continuous material update’. Please let me know if that solves your issue.

Are you running any other plugins that may be using your cuda resources?
If so, cou7ld you try temporarily uninstalling them to see if this is an issue?
